Since I didn't see any instructions on the web for a circular origami mobile, I thought I should make up for my slackerness by doing a tutorial/how-to so that you can make one of these nifty mobiles for your home too. This is my first how-to/tutorial so I'd love any feedback or suggestions!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/423596068/" title="Origami Mobile by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="Origami Mobile" height="500" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/423596068_69df2450ab.jpg" width="375" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Materials:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Origami Paper in a variety of prints and patterns&lt;br /&gt;Beads&lt;br /&gt;Heavy Thread (such as embroidery floss)&lt;br /&gt;Large Needle (such as an embroidery needle)&lt;br /&gt;12" embroidery hoop with the outer hoop removed&lt;br /&gt;Hook&lt;br /&gt;Elmers Glue &lt;br /&gt;Scissors&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.&amp;nbsp; Fold eighteen (18) origami cranes.  There's lot of information on this on the &lt;a href="http://monkey.org/%7Eaidan/origami/crane/"&gt;web &lt;/a&gt;so I'll skip repeating those instructions here.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;2.&amp;nbsp; Cut the following lengths of thread:&amp;nbsp; 12", 13", 14", 15", 16", 17", 18", 19", 20", 21", 22", 23", 24", 25", 26", 27", 28", and 29".&amp;nbsp; You should have 18 pieces of thread when you're done.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3.&amp;nbsp; Tie a knot at the end of the 12" piece of thread.&amp;nbsp; The knot should be large enough to hold your bead on the thread.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4.&amp;nbsp; With the other end of the thread, thread your needle.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Add a bead to your thread and run the needle and thread through the bottom of one crane.&amp;nbsp; This will be the first crane and shortest crane on the mobile.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5.&amp;nbsp; Add another bead to the needle and thread.&amp;nbsp; You should now have a bead under the crane and on top of the crane.&amp;nbsp; The bead is important because the cranes are made of paper and the hole that the thread runs through can grow slightly in size during the construction process.&amp;nbsp; We don't want the crane to fall off the thread!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6.&amp;nbsp; Remove the needle and tie the free end of the thread to the hoop.&amp;nbsp; Trim any excess thread on either end.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7.&amp;nbsp; Repeat steps 3 through 6 for all the pieces of thread - continuing in order from shortest to longest.&amp;nbsp; Evenly space the cranes around the hoop so that they gradually descend.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8.&amp;nbsp; Once you've tied all the cranes to the hoop, add a dot of glue where the thread is tied to hoop.&amp;nbsp; This will keep the thread positions in place.&amp;nbsp; Let the glue dry before proceeding.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;9. Cut 3 more&amp;nbsp; pieces of thread - each 24" long.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Tie the 3 pieces of thread equally spaced around the hoop.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10.&amp;nbsp; Gather the three hanging ends of the thread and tie them together in a knot about half way along the length of the thread.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;11.&amp;nbsp; Tie another knot at the end of the remaining length of the 3 gathered pieces.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;12.&amp;nbsp; Install the hook from the ceiling and hang your mobile!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;Because origami is so light, the crane mobile with gentle twirl - an added bonus!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;i&gt;I hope these instructions are easy to follow.&amp;nbsp; Part of the reason his spackle jobs are a little homely I think, is because spackling requires patience and we're usually running around with a million things to do and not enough time in the day.&amp;nbsp; I decided to spend our kid free Friday night painting the kids' bathroom (I'm easily entertained).&amp;nbsp; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;The bathroom is pretty standard - tub, toilet, vanity, and mirror and it's sorely in need of a paint job.&amp;nbsp; Lowe's also sells the same brush at about the same price.&amp;nbsp; Turns out the brush is worth it though.&amp;nbsp; It made all the edging and detail work easier and the lines came out clean.&amp;nbsp; Since the most labor intensive part of painting is the edging and painting a bathroom is primarily an edging job, $14 seems worth it.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5647337867/" title="DSC_0738 by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="DSC_0738" height="500" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5261/5647337867_23711191f8.jpg" width="333" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;We decided on a light purple color called Rhapsody Lilac to match the shower curtain.&amp;nbsp; Seems like paint always looks darker on the wall than on the small swatch but we were very happy with the finished product.&amp;nbsp; The color complemented both the shower curtain and the print from Etsy nicely!&amp;nbsp; We planned a week of sleeping through the night, sleeping in on weekends and spending our nights and weekends getting to all those things we don't normally have time to do such as sanding and painting the front door trim which is sorely in need of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The paint is peeling and we have these funky black spots all around the trim.&amp;nbsp; The manager at our local Duron paint store said that these spots are from the trees around the doorway.&amp;nbsp; We have to sand them all off, prime, and paint.&amp;nbsp; We left Duron armed with all the necessary supplies to tackle this project.&amp;nbsp; Since we were at Duron, we even bought the &lt;a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/06/how-to-paint-trim-like-a-pro/"&gt;paintbrush&lt;/a&gt; Sherry at &lt;a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/"&gt;YHL&lt;/a&gt; recommended.&amp;nbsp; They actually didn't have the exact model brush (it was sold out), but the manager assured us that this is the same brush but nicer.&amp;nbsp; It also wasn't $5 (more like $14!).&amp;nbsp; I hope it's as good as it's supposed to be.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;Mother Nature seems to have a different plan for us:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5637764065/" title="Weather by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="Weather" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5149/5637764065_c6f6291454.jpg" width="450" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;We're having a week of rain!&amp;nbsp; The only day it's not supposed to rain, we both have plans for that evening.&amp;nbsp; All this rain is great for the flowers but not so great for our plans to paint the house exterior.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We really want to get the door painted before it gets too hot.&amp;nbsp; I think what pushed us over the edge was the kids toys.&amp;nbsp; They are *everywhere* - in every corner of the house.&amp;nbsp; We don't even buy them - we've just accumulated them from various holidays and birthdays.&amp;nbsp; Whenever we try to donate or give away something, the targeted items becomes a "favorite" that cannot be parted with.&amp;nbsp; I suppose finishing the basement is our way of making the house more for the adults again.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once we mentally committed to this sizable project - we needed to dig up the builder's original floor plans for reference.&amp;nbsp; Since we bought the house so long ago, I couldn't for the life of me find the plans.&amp;nbsp; The county doesn't keep plans this old on file but luckily, a quick request to our neighborhood Yahoo group solved the problem and within a couple days we had a copy of the basement floor plans as envisioned by Pulte Homes, our builder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5617191043/" title="Builder Floor Plan by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="Builder Floor Plan" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5266/5617191043_cb82ba69b2.jpg" width="480"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We decided on a couple modifications to accommodate our specific needs, such as making the study a lot larger since I work from home once a week.&amp;nbsp; Plus I'm pretty messy so the extra space will give me plenty of room to spread out my mess :-)&amp;nbsp; We also have the addition at the back of the house but this being America, ours is supersized and called a Florida Room.&amp;nbsp; This ends up being Glenn's space for exercise equipment and most importantly a big TV.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was able to whip together our version of the floor plan using Microsoft Visio really easily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5618183504/" title="Mock Up by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5143/5618183504_808011f0ce.jpg" width="480" alt="Mock Up"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since we're not yet done with this project, we're still modifying and tweaking it.&amp;nbsp; Religiously he weeds, seeds, and fertilizes on a prescribed schedule that our local hardware store recommended to him.&amp;nbsp; But the bushes tend to get neglected since I've never paid much attention to them and Glenn's more focused on getting our lawn to look like a green carpet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our house came pre-landscaped and like many lessons learned, we should have paid more attention to the spacing and placement of the newly planted landscape but of course we didn't.&amp;nbsp; They've had seven years to fully take root and spread and one plant looks like a creature coming out from the black lagoon with arms and legs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5633710964/" title="before trim copy by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="before trim" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5267/5633710964_465cb83779.jpg" width="480" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Glenn planned a full day of trimming the bushes, mulching, and seeding the lawn - the key word here is &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;planned&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;.&amp;nbsp; He got about half way done with trimming with the electric hedge trimmer and then cut himself pretty darn deep.&amp;nbsp; Luckily his digits were still attached but he was forced to take a break from yard work and go to the emergency room.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, being as obsessed about the yard that he is, Glenn didn't let a near dismemberment stop him.&amp;nbsp; He finished up the trimming and mulching when he got back from the ER.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's his finished product.&amp;nbsp; We bought two of these large planters last year but never got around to actually putting anything into them.&amp;nbsp; This year we made some progress and actually filled the planters with gravel and top soil.&amp;nbsp; Combined with a great sale on petunias at Lowe's ($0.50 for a six pack), we had the motivation to finish this simple project :-)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/5633029807/" title="Lowes Bargain by sim-san, on Flickr"&gt;&lt;img alt="Lowes Bargain" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5633029807_73d0d7c527.jpg" width="480" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;The only drawback was that the plants didn't have many flowers blooming but were otherwise healthy and at $0.50 a pack, we weren't going to be too picky.&amp;nbsp; On our way out we also saw the sign that Lowe's guarantees their plants for a year and since they're annuals, that's pretty much a lifetime warranty!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After an afternoon of playing with the dirt and flowers (with a short interruption when we thought Glenn cut his finger off with the hedge trimmer), we had these two pretty planters to adorn our front door.&amp;nbsp; Being the procrastinator that I am, we never got around to installing it and then we moved.  So in a way, it's a good thing I procrastinated so we got to take the door knocker with us. Back then the exchange rate was something like 1.33 euros = $1 so it cost us about $15.&amp;nbsp; If we were to buy it today with the exchange rate, it would be around $30!&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;This blog is really helping us (really me) get motivated to finish up these lingering projects.&amp;nbsp; I have lots of ideas but am lacking in the follow through so anything that helps get me over the hump is a good thing. A plumber who we trust, is very competent and reasonably priced.  As a bonus he's a huge Giants fan too (makes DH happy).  Unlike the electrician where we got three quotes and interviewed them, we committed to our trusty plumber's quote right away.  We set a date and he starts the work.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Everything is moving along nicely when our trusty plumber points out that the toilet flange is a little far from the wall so either we have to special order a 14" rough in toilet or move the flange to make up for a 2" gap.  We have some time to think about it which launches me into some late night searches for 14" rough in toilets.  We decide that it might be a good idea to check out all the other toilets in the house and find that our other full bath upstairs also has a 2" gap from the back of the toilet to the wall.  We've lived in our home for seven years and it's never bothered us so we decide to bag both ideas and go with a regular 12" rough in toilet&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0mgILbT9hNs/TaWrpTgHkeI/AAAAAAAAAD8/wAIPI552skQ/s1600/offsetflange.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595066838175683042" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0mgILbT9hNs/TaWrpTgHkeI/AAAAAAAAAD8/wAIPI552skQ/s320/offsetflange.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; height: 252px; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; width: 252px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;Trusty plumber comes back to do the work and has another discovery (uh oh).  Remember how the builder had to &lt;a href="http://kraftmonkey.blogspot.com/2011/04/details-details-details.html"&gt;reconfigure the bathroom rough ins&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://test/" style="font-family: arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;?  Well, during our home inspection, we should have lifted the toilet flange cover because it turns out our builder took a short cut and installed an &lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.diychatroom.com/f7/does-offset-toilet-flange-interfere-outflow-23058/" style="font-family: arial;"&gt;offset flange&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;   which isn't to code in our county. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;We had no idea what an offset flange was so I quickly googled it.  Because the flange is offset, the toilet outflow can be impeded leading to clogs (yuck!).  They're also apparently not to code in most places so it's interesting that they still make these.  If the builder hadn't used an offset flange, then the toilet would be 4" from the wall which is a lot more obvious than 2". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So we're back to two options - we can either hope that the inspector doesn't notice our offset flange since the flange has a little plastic cover on it (and he didn't notice it the first time around even with the metal ring around it) or fix it for $200 more which involves breaking up the concrete again!  We like to do things above board and proper to save headaches down the road and after visions of a backed up toilet zoomed through my head, we decide it's worth the $200 to fix it properly. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So the concrete floor gets broken up for a second time to move the toilet flange.  One benefit of doing this is that we now correct the location once and for all so that we won't have a 2" gap.  Our trusty plumber re-pours the concrete (see the wet concrete around the flange?) and the problem is solved! This was great and saved us a lot of money but in hindsight, we should have paid a lot more attention to the placement of the rough ins.  When we did our home inspection prior to closing, our inspector pointed out that the location of the toilet flange was way off from the tub and sink so the builder moved the toilet flange on his dime which included breaking up the concrete floor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fast forward seven years later when we actually start doing the detailed measurements to finish the bathroom...Turns out that the bathroom is a little on the small side and while not preferable, is certainly livable since we have room for a full tub. So every night when we ate dinner together, we could talk about how the project was going and things we needed to be aware of.  For example, because the bathroom is on the smallish size, the max vanity size would be 30" wide. We didn't want to have everything feel tight and cramped so we decide on a pedestal sink and also the matching toilet from the Kohler Memoirs collection. They've inspired me to start blogging again and to get me motivated to finally fix up our house after living here for so many years!  Really DIY home improvement is crafting on steroids.  I've spent so much money on craft supplies, I realize I need to improve my rate of return on my investment so I'm channeling my energies toward fixing up our home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;We have one huge project going on and that's finishing our basement.  Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the totally unfinished product but here's after all the framing is done.  My husband's super handy Uncle Steve, did the framing for us and we are pleased with the results. As it is now, we are having to pay large sums of money to get the framing, plumbing, electrical, etc...  It really adds up even with us acting as our own general contractor.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;2) Schedule:  The builder would have done it faster and we would have had use of the space for the last, oh 10+ years!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;3) Resources:  A very large chunk of my time is spent on this project.  From scheduling the various trades people and making arrangements to work from home, to researching bathroom fixtures that are affordable but that both DH and I like. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;However, there are definitely some nice benefits to doing the basement on our own:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;1)  I get an awesome home office:  we're planning large french doors on my huge den/home office/study to be.  In addition to pretty doors, I'm going to have two nice sized walk in closets again with double doors.  I'm a pack rat (as my husband can attest to) and so these nice size closets are a must for me. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;2)  Bathroom we will love:  Yes, I'm spending entire Friday and Saturday nights studying up on different types of toilets (elongated or round?  12" rough in vs 14"? left or right handed trip lever?).  Sometimes just having two choices is a good thing.  With some patience, we finally did decided on a toilet, tub and sink that I'm excited about and my husband is happy with.  Something must be wrong with me for being excited about the toilet :-).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;This space is going to be awesome! My favorites are CraftyPod and Material Mama.  Material Mama in particular has inspired me to take up sewing again.  I know the very basics of sewing - enough to make pillows, curtains, etc, but I wanted to try making clothes for Monkey.  I've been somewhat uninspired by the kids clothes in the stores and I've always envisioned Monkey in cute A-line dresses.  So with the help and coaching of my MIL, I made this dress from a Simplicity pattern.  It only took a few hours and included a zipper which I had never done before.  I'm going to reuse the pattern and make lots more dresses :-)  I purchased some really cute fabrics from Repro Depot this week just for this purpose. I adore the embroidery patterns in particular from Sublime Stitching.  Coincidentally I also received the Sublime Stitching book from Amazon this week.  I already am working on my first piece for a birthday present which I'll post when complete.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other projects in the works are another A-line dress for Monkey and flannel hello kitty pjs. I started out with a plan which quickly fell apart.  The swap had a link to several apron patterns but I wanted to make the retro 1/2 apron and I just couldn't understand the instructions I found online.  The part that threw me was the gathering since I've never done those before.  I ended up caving and buying The Apron Book on Amazon - a move I don't regret at all.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/81643338@N00/441531408/" title="Photo Sharing"&gt;&lt;img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/208/441531408_ac79efcb9a_o.jpg" width="116" height="150" alt="Apron" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It took a while to ship and so when I finally got the book last week, I was a bit rushed to finish the apron.  The instructions were really easy to follow though and there were lots of helpful tips (like add your embellishments before you do the gathers). They were easy to make, required very little fabric, and came out so cute.  I'm giving these as a baby gift this weekend at a shower and am also making several more pairs as gifts. Everyone (vegans and non-vegans alike) thought they were great.  I think my best compliment was from my mom who asked somewhat suspiciously "Are you sure these are really vegan?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;makes 12 cupcakes&lt;br /&gt;1 cup soy milk&lt;br /&gt;1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar&lt;br /&gt;1 1/4 cups all purpose flour&lt;br /&gt;2 tablespoons cornstarch&lt;br /&gt;3/4 teaspoon baking powder&lt;br /&gt;1/2 teaspoon baking soda&lt;br /&gt;1/2 teaspoon salt&lt;br /&gt;1/3 cup canola oil&lt;br /&gt;3/4 cup granulated sugar&lt;br /&gt;2 1/4 teaspoons vanilla&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Directions:&lt;br /&gt;1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit and line muffin pan with cupcake liners.&lt;br /&gt;2.  Whisk the soy milk and vinegar in a measuring cup and set aside a few minutes to get good and curdled.  (Note:  I did this but never really got a "good" curdle" - the cupcakes still turned out well though).&lt;br /&gt;3.  Beat together the soy milk mixture, oil, sugar, vanilla in a large bowl.  Sift in the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt and mix until no large lumps remain.  (Note:  I hate sifting, so I sifted about 1 a cup of the flour, got impatient and then dumped it all in to mix - again the cupcakes still turned out well!).&lt;br /&gt;4.  Fill the cupcake liners two-thirds of the way and back for 20 to 22 minutes till done.  Cool completely before frosting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Frosting Recipe:&lt;br /&gt;1 cup vegetable shortening (like crisco)&lt;br /&gt;1 teaspoon vanilla&lt;br /&gt;2 tablespoons water&lt;br /&gt;1 pound of confectioners' sugar (approximately 4 cups)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cream shortening, flavoring and water.  Add dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together. Making dumplings is definitely more an art than a science so as my mom was showing me how to make the dumplings, I was taking detailed notes and pictures.  Dumplings also require A LOT of time.  This project turned into two days of cooking, although the first day was pretty easy.  We made the dough Saturday night and then let it sit overnight.  Sunday we made the filling (Pork and Napa) and rolled the wrapping and made the dumplings.  Homemade dumplings can't be beat so after reviewing my notes and pix, I'm going to try it out myself.  I expect it will take me several tries as well as a fair amount of consultation from my mom. I think in one more stitching session, I'll be done!!  This is a pretty major accomplishment for me since I have problems completing my projects which stems from the fact that I like to bite off more than I can chew and so end up starting lots of projects but rarely finish any of them :-)  But since I'm close to done, I've already been trolling for my next project.  I've settled on this &lt;a href="http://www.dioramarama.com/2006/12/grocery_bag_dispense.html"&gt;project&lt;/a&gt; that I found on another blog. This weekend we went to see &lt;a href="http://www.pingu.com"&gt;Pingu&lt;/a&gt; at the &lt;a href="http://www.nga.gov/kids/kids.htm"&gt;National Gallery of Art&lt;/a&gt;.  Monkey actually sat through most of the movie which is a first for her.  Usually she gets scared and wants to leave.  Luckily Pingu is not too scary and had the added benefit of having a baby sister (Monkey loves all babies) and with the promise of a craft project at the end of the film - she sat still for most of it.  For the project, we made clay penguins (pictures to follow soon) using Crayola modeling clay which I've never tried before.  Unlike typical modeling clay, the Crayola brand doesn't require an oven - the clay just air dries which is kind of nice. This recipe was on the back of the bag of vegan chocolate chips and I made a couple of minor modifications that seemed to work well including using soy "peanut" butter instead of regular peanut butter.  I made these as a gift for &lt;a href="http://www.boundarystones.org/"&gt;Mark&lt;/a&gt; because he doesn't like to own a lot of things, so food is really the only good gift I think he can use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Everyone in my family (vegan or not) thought these were yummy and since one of my complaints about vegan food is that it often doesn't taste good to a non-vegan, I liked this recipe since everyone ate up the cookies!  We even left these for Santa and he liked them too :-)  The only thing to note about these cookies is that they spread out quickly and are on the thin side so make sure to space them well apart.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Nutty" Chocolate Chip Cookies&lt;br /&gt;Egg, Nut, and Milk Free&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 cup flour&lt;br /&gt;1 cup rolled oats&lt;br /&gt;1/2 teaspoon baking soda&lt;br /&gt;1/2 teaspoon salt&lt;br /&gt;3/4 cup canola oil&lt;br /&gt;1 cup brown sugar&lt;br /&gt;1/2 cup granulated sugar&lt;br /&gt;1/2 cup applesauce&lt;br /&gt;3/4 cup smooth soy “peanut” butter such as IM Healthy Brand&lt;br /&gt;2 teaspoons vanilla extract&lt;br /&gt;10 ounce (1 bag) vegan chocolate chips&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.&lt;br /&gt;2. Grease or line a baking pan with parchment paper.&lt;br /&gt;3. Combine flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.&lt;br /&gt;4. Mix oil, and sugars until thoroughly blended. Beat in applesauce, soy “peanut” butter, and vanilla until combined.&lt;br /&gt;5. Add dry ingredients to sugar mixture and mix well. Stir in chips.&lt;br /&gt;6. Scoop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the cookie sheet.  Leave lots of space (at least 2 ½ inches depending on the side of your dough ball) between each ball. Cookies spread quite a bit upon baking. &lt;br /&gt;7. Bake 15 to 18 minutes or until cookies are light golden brown.&lt;br /&gt;8. People are so creative!  Lots of my in-laws are very crafty (in the good sense) so I thought I'd start a blog to share what I'm working on with them and whoever else might be interested.  Only problem is that I tend to work in waves so I don't know how regularly I'll post.  Of course the only way to find out is to jump right in!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was pretty happy with this holiday in that I didn't feel totally overwhelmed and was more or less on schedule with the major things (although the holiday cards went out late).  I have the &lt;a href="http://www.flylady.net"&gt;Fly Lady&lt;/a&gt; to thank for this!  I highly recommend her techniques.  She's very positive and motivating especially since I can be a procrastinator.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So to kick off the new year, I'll tell you what projects and crafts I did over the holidays since I actually had some time on my hands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After visiting my in-laws house over the holidays, I decided that what we were missing was a nativity scene. I tried baking my own walls, roof, etc, but I don't think I had a very good recipe.  I ended up getting a kit from Costco which made it all very easy!
